Shizen Vase by Astrid Hauton

About the Item

Shizen vase by Astrid Hauton Dimensions: D 11.5 x H 32 cm Materials: Woven washi paper, waxed black Valchromat. « Shizen », in Zen tradition, refers to nature as it includes human beings. The Shizen vase has been designed to embody the natural origin of its woven fibers, while remaining dedicated to its purpose to highlight flowers. The presence of the Shizen vase is an invitation to strike a balance between being natural while remaining distinct from it. The Shizen vase is part of the Kawayama collection. Made from the weaving mat that covers the tatamis, the Kawayama collection takes this iconic element of the Japanese culture to a new dimension. Traditionally flat and straight, the tatami suddenly expands in volume and curves, to become luxury homeware and contemporary furniture. Each object is made by hand, following a unique and meticulous process, which reveals the surprising structural properties and sublimates the vibrant effect of this woven material. The Shizen vase comes in different colour combinations. It contains a glass cylinder that can be easily inserted or removed thanks to a simple device delivered with the vase. It also comes with a metal grid to make ikebana. Astrid Hauton Inspired by the Asian culture and the practice of Zen, Astrid Hauton creates high quality objects and decors, with clean lines, which invite contemplation and inspire inner calm. After graduating from ENSCI-Les Ateliers, Astrid chose to work with artisans in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, where she collaborated with NGOs for 3 years. In contact with them, she discovered local know-how and materials, and learned about oriental wisdom. Back in Paris, she created the studio in 2015 and joined the Ateliers de Paris. Following her artistic residency in Kyoto in 2017, Astrid started to study Zen philosophy and Feng-Shui principles, which enlighten her on the art of living a harmonious life. Her approach to design consists of considering “interior” and “interiority” as intrinsically linked. To combine the art of living “at home” with the art of living “in ourselves”, in order to better inhabit the world. Astrid Hauton Studio explores know-how and sublimates materials, to create collections of singular objects in limited series. The studio collaborates with prescribers, architects and brands, to jointly design soothing spaces thanks to tailor-made creations.
