A very large and exuberantly decorated Japanese Satsuma millefleur covered vase, marked Satsuma, Showa period, mid 20th century, Japan. The large vase of attractive baluster form, with a slightly splayed foot, narrow waist, and tapered body with high shoulders and short neck. The vase topped by a domed cover with a large finial shaped like a hoju, the wish fulfilling jewel. The vase decorated all over in a dense field of flowering blossoms - peony, lotus, and chrysanthemum - in a design known as millefleur, or a thousand flowers. An Exceptionally Fine Quality Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Vase of unusually large proportions, early Meiji period (1868-1912) and of Museum quality. The main tapering oviform body with everted neck, with exquisite translucent rich dark shades of red enamel over an engraved and chased silver foil ground depicting bamboo leaf decoration. Top rim and base are mounted in bronze. Mark at base as shown, see images. Condition: Good condition with nice surface patination, one bruise loss to surface at shoulder area which shows where glass is absent, see image towards end. Height: (an impressive) 12” (30.5cm).
