About the Item
A large hand-blown early glass vessel by the celebrated Pacific Northwest glass artist, Sonja Blomdahl (b. 1952), signed & numbered, 1980's.
In 1974 Blomdahl got her degree from Massachusetts College of Art & studied under sculptor Dan Dailey. She then trained at the Orrefors glassworks in Sweden, Venetian glass master Checco Ongaro taught Blomdahl the method of double-bubble blowing (or incalmo), of which this large vessel is a great example of.
In 1978, Blomdahl served as a teaching assistant at the Pilchuck Glass School (Stanwood, Washington) she has held teaching positions at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine; and the Appalachian Center in Smithville, Tennessee. Blomdahl's first solo exhibition was at the Traver Sutton Gallery in Seattle in 1981. She opened her own studio in Seattle in 1983 which remained open until 2009. Since the late 2000s, she has moved beyond the symmetrical glass vessels she is known for and works increasingly with architectural forms.
The sphere having an orange base with a band of clear glass to the center, the top also in orange glass & having an aperture to the center. The vessel has a ground pontil mark and marked with an etched signature "Sonja" and numbered "BP 2287". This is an great early example of the largest of glass sphere vessels blown by Sonja Blomdahl, condition is excellent.
