Stevens and Williams Osiris Art Glass Vase, C. 1886

About the Item

In 1886, John Northwood, famous glass artist of Stourbridge, UK, (later instrumental in the development of art glass in the US), invented a pull up machine allowing small metal teeth to reach through a clear layer of glass and pull a layer of color up, resulting in the swirled surface seen here. This color combinations and interior casing complement one another perfectly. Charles Hajdamach notes in British Glass 1800-1914 that almost all examples are marked with PATENT, but marked ones are seldom available. Also, one pull is short due to production difficulties with the earliest examples. Notably, John Northwood also invented the crimping machine used along the neck of this vase. Perfect original condition.

Bertil Vallien Cameo Midnight sky Vase with Ravens Crows Kosta Boda Atelier 1992
By Bertil Vallien
Located in Mobile, AL
Bertil's work is often haunting, but this bottle vase is ready for display or perhaps for the most adventurous as a container for your personal witch's brew. A entire layer of end of day type scattered glass has been cameo acid cut back to reveal a frosted midnight blue glass underlayer. But, just look at these birds. Ravens, crows... certainly birds of the night. A taller neck than I have seen before and the slight slumping and bubbled inclusions reinforce the visual message that this is both art and handicraft. The fortuitous bold coloration of the birds makes the pattern boldly assert. Marked Kosta Boda Atelier 92 and B Vallien...
