About the Item
An absolutely stunning mid-century studio pottery vase, showcasing a deep, complex sang de boeuf glaze and a quietly elegant silhouette. This form—often referred to as a weed pot—is designed to hold a single stem, twig, or sprig, drawing attention to the interplay between natural form and handmade vessel. With its small opening and bulbous body, the weed pot became a hallmark of mid-20th century ceramics, where restraint, abstraction, and purity of form took precedence over function.
This piece is signed Anna and dated ’58 on the underside, and also retains an NFS (Not For Sale) label, suggesting it was once exhibited—likely in a juried show or gallery setting during the height of the American studio craft movement.
The glaze is a fine example of sang de boeuf, or “oxblood,” a copper-based red glaze originally developed in 17th century China during the Qing Dynasty. Western potters, particularly in the post-war period, became deeply fascinated with historical Asian ceramic techniques, attempting to recreate and reinterpret these storied finishes. The difficulty in achieving a stable, rich sang de boeuf glaze—due to its dependence on highly controlled reduction firing—made it a sort of technical badge of honor among serious studio potters.
Throughout the 1950s, American and European studio ceramics underwent a dramatic transformation. Influenced by Modernism, potters began to explore pared-down, sculptural forms, using surface and silhouette to create pieces that were both decorative and expressive. The weed pot form, though small in scale, became an ideal vehicle for this aesthetic—minimal yet personal, refined yet approachable.
This vase is a gorgeous encapsulation of that period: a thoughtful fusion of ancient influence and modern sensibility. Whether used as intended or appreciated as a sculptural object, it remains an evocative and timeless piece of ceramic art.
