About the Item
Tall 1960s white caned Murano vase. Mezza Filigrana footed vase, circa 1960 in the style of Dino Martens. The chalice shape vase on foot has three vertical curves and white cane work spirals around to create extra movement
Filigrana is a classical glass making technique developed in the sixteenth century on the Venetian island of Murano. Over the centuries, this and closely related techniques became a kind of trademark for the Murano glass industry. Parallel threads in a loose spiral winding around a vessel from top to bottom form what is perhaps the most basic application of the method. This is known as mezza filigrana (half filigree).

Large Twin-Handled Vase by Ercole Barovier for Barovier and Toso, 1956
By Barovier&Toso, Ercole Barovier
Located in London, GB
The double handled trumpet shaped vase designed by Ercole Barovier (1889-1974) for Barovier and Toso 1956-57 is set in a layer of clear glass over a layer of white, over a layer oyster colored opaque glass with gold leaf application. The ribbing at the base of vase the stretches out at the mouth tied in by a ringed band. The handles have been skillfully formed by tightly twisting the glass formed into rings applied close to the upper edge of the vase.
Barovier made his mark on the company, the glass-works industry and history. The vessel executed by Barovier and Toso shows the technical complexity of a company founded in 1295. Barovier and Toso have held the realm of its glassworks for 750 years in Italy as Vetreria Artistica Barovier & Co.
