Tall STACKED Alaskan Cedar Vase by Richard Haining, Shou Sugi Ban, Available Now

$8,500

About

Part of Richard Haining's STACKED Collection, this vase was made using reclaimed Alaskan Cedar salvaged from a decommissioned NYC water tower. The wood's natural coloring is a very pale light blond. And although this vase is very dark in it’s appearance, there is no stain involved. The exterior of the vase was treated using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. This process involves using fire to char the surface of the wood, resulting in the natural sugars within the wood to burn, leaving the color ranging from dark brown to almost black in tone, and sealed using my custom varnish process. STACKED piece by individual piece, layer upon layer, Richard builds his vessels hollow, carefully placing each piece of wood to create the desired profile. Once built, the surface is gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand held tools, resulting in a finely honed finish with slight undulations, similar to that of hand-built ceramics. The salvaged wood offers one-of-a-kind patterns brought to life by Richard’s STACKED process, achieving a quality reminiscent of both basketry and mosaic tile work. All vessels are one-of-a-kind art objects. Please note, the last two images are group shots showing scale. This listing only includes the vessel described and shown in the previous images.

About The Maker

Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
