A rare and unusual Watcombe aesthetic movement terracotta sleeve or spill vase decorated with floral and linear patterning by renowned Scottish born designer Christopher Dresser (British, 1834 – 1904) and dating from around 1885. The red clay vase is lightly potted with low relief molded bands around the upper and lower rims decorated with starburst and linear patterned designs set between simple raised edging with three further panels similarly separated to the body of the vase. Two are painted in turquoise glazes and border a central band with slightly weaving vertical patterning and painted with two pink toned bands. Contemporary hand-painted decorative orange porcelain vase in a stunningly unique shape, the signed work of master porcelain artist of the Kutani region of Japan. Entitled “The Sun at the End of the Day,” the artist has used a fine brush to create intricately undulating patterns expressed through a subtle layering of variations in shades of orange and yellow. The viewer is invited to speculate whether the slightly flattened globe represents the horizon teaming with clouds that filter the light of the setting sun, or whether it serves as a canvas for conveying the explosive energy of the surface of the sun itself. The creator of this work is a second-generation porcelain artist who spent most of his life working within the confines of the Ko-Kutanti (old Kutani) tradition of colors and designs. Upon turning 60, he forswore the world of tradition and had since dedicated himself to freely expressing his vision of life and nature, a pursuit that has given birth to stunningly expressive designs and colors.
