About the Item

The FINLANDIA series, introduced in 1964, was Timo Sarpaneva's masterpiece of the 1960s. While repeatedly exploring and experimenting with glass expression in pursuit of new techniques, in 1963 Timo Sarpaneva took a hint from a burnt wooden mould, which was a by-product of another experiment, and developed it into a work of art. The uneven, irregular surface texture of the glass, which was directly transferred from the surface of the burnt wooden mould, was a revolutionary expression in the 1960s, when simple modern design, which had continued since the 1950s, was somewhat stagnant, and became a trend that continued into the 1970s. The same item number can be produced in several different wood patterns, and the surfaces of these patterns change over the course of production, resulting in each piece being unique in terms of form and surface texture, even if it is the same item number. Depending on the size and form, it seems that only 10-20 pieces could be produced from a single wooden form. Clear glass with a slight pinkish colour. Signed 'TIMO SARPANEVA - 3360'.
