Two Large Sèvres Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Porcelain Vases on Walnut Plinths

These exquisite painted porcelain vases were crafted in the late 19th century in France. They have been styled in the image 18th century Sèvres Porcelain, which continued to be very fashionable in Europe in this period.  The oval-bodied porcelain vases have been crafted on a grand scale, and have been intricately decorated with Napoleonic scenes, gilt emblems and gilt foliate decoration, all set against a dark blue ground.  Both vases are topped by gilt bronze pinecone finials, placed on dark blue-colored porcelain lids, which are decorated with gilt 'N' symbols for Napoleon I, contained within gilt laurel leaf wreaths, as well as dates of importance within Napoleon’s rule. The inside of the lids are inscribed with, 'M. Imple / de Sevres'. The vase mouths are edged with gilt bronze, and the necks are painted in a similar style to the lids, with crowned 'N's, accompanied by gilt foliage.  On their fronts, the vase bodies feature highly-detailed Napoleonic scenes, which, according to the signature, were created by the artist, J. Pascault. Pascault specialised in porcelain paintings that were based on works by the old masters. In this pair, one vase depicts ‘Le Sagre’, or (The Coronation) ‘d'apres David’. The image faithfully recreates Jacques-Louis David’s famous 1807 oil painting of ‘The Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon and the Coronation of Empress Joséphine on December 2, 1804’. In the image, a crowned Napoleon I stands with his back to Pope Pius VII and places a crown onto his wife, Joséphine’s head. The other vase records ‘Le Mariage’ (The Marriage) between Napoleon I and Marie Louise, Napoleon’s second wife, which occurred in 1810. This image has been painted ‘d’apres Rouget’ — that is, after an oil on canvas version of the scene by George Rouget. The piece shows Cardinal Fesc with his hand raised as he blesses Napoleon I and Marie Louise, who stand before him. The back of the vase bowls depict grand French châteaux, which were favoured by Napoleon I. The buildings relate to the front scenes, through their functions. The Coronation of Napoleon and Joséphine, for instance, is paired with an image of ‘La Malmaison’, which was estate where Joséphine lived. The second vase painting, which shows the marriage of Napoleon and Marie Louise, is accompanied by an image of ‘Fontainebleau’, which the couple regularly visited. Both vases stand on porcelain stems, which are painted and gilded in a similar style to the necks and lids. They rest on square, gilt bronze bases, which feature classical masks, foliate forms, and paw feet. The vases come with original, specially-designed, walnut plinths. These plinths stand on four cabriole legs, encircled on the upper level by floral swags and lower level by circular bands. They rest on shaped, four-corned bases, which are raised up on bun feet. The plinths allow you to view the vases at eye-level, where you can fully admire the detail of the painted and parcel gilt ornament. Measures: Total - Height 220cm Vases - Height 155cm, diameter 50cm Plinths - Height 65cm, width 41cm, depth 41cm.
