A central figure in contemporary Swedish glass art, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien played a transformative role within Kosta Boda, one of Europe’s oldest and most innovative glass manufacturers. Her collaboration with the brand began in the late 1970s and marked a departure from restrained Scandinavian minimalism toward a more personal, emotive, and expressive visual language.
Hydman-Vallien worked primarily in free-blown glass, often incorporating hand-painted enamels and fused pigments directly onto the surface. Her technique emphasized spontaneity and gesture, using vivid color palettes and bold brushstrokes to depict recurring motifs such as serpents, tulips, eyes, and stylized human faces.
Her work with Kosta Boda helped redefine the role of the artist in industrial glassmaking, blurring the lines between functional object and expressive artwork.
