Unusual Bronze Vase by Kobayashi Masayoshi, Showa Period, 20th Century

About the Item

A striking and highly sculptural bronze vase by Japanese artist Kobayashi Masayoshi, dating to the Showa period (20th century). Distinguished by its bold, asymmetrical form and rich surface patina, this work showcases a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese metal artistry. The vase measures 18 cm (7 in) in height, with dimensions of 16 x 12.5 cm (6.5 x 5 in), and weighs 1780 g (4 lb). It is signed on the base and comes with its original tomobako — a signed wooden presentation box — bringing the total weight to 2250 g (5 lb). The surface exhibits light, natural patination and minor abrasions consistent with age, adding to the piece’s character and authenticity. This is a compelling work for collectors of 20th-century Japanese design or those drawn to the interplay between modernist form and traditional technique.
