About the Item

Clear glass vase engraved with a mermaid motif; the shape of the vase is reminiscent of sea waves Vase on a black glass base, signed Orrefors and Vicke Lindstrand and numbered 1220.01.1(?) Orrefors is a Swedish glassworks founded in 1898, originally producing medical and domestic glass. In 1913 it changed ownership and took a new direction, manufacturing glasses and crystal objects: traditional glassmaking methods were perfected, resulting in the "grail" glass. With this technique, the pattern made with colored glass is wrapped in layers of clear glass, thus preserving the image while the overall shape of the glass is worked and shaped. Orrefors then achieved great success both at the Gothenburg exhibition in 1923, and at the Paris exhibition in 1925. Vicke Lindstrand joined Orrefors in the 1930s, with glassblowers he created the "ariel" glass technique, an innovation that produced deeper and richer images that seemed to transform and flow as the light was refracted by the glass.
