About the Item

A very large "kantharos" vase featuring scroll hands, constructed in a "water foam" design, by Marius Giuge. The piece is extremely decorative and the enamel has kept all of its shine. The white color is dotted with black alveoli that contrast with the clear enamel. The technique used to achieve this effect was to add chemical compounds to the enamel. Depending on the chosen dosage, this created variations in the size and depth of the craters. This decoration, invented by Marius Giuge, inspired the "Fat Lava" ceramics, very popular in Germany in the late 1960s and 1970s. An iconic example of Marius Giuge's production in the 1960s and 1970s, it is signed on the base as MG – VALLAURIS - AM for "Marius Giuge - Vallauris - Alpes Maritimes". A very small loss on the enamel on the foot of the vase but barely noticeable. Marius Giuge, a key figure in Vallauris (1909-1980), lived through the post-war boom years with classic forms and glazes that bordered on kitsch. He inherited the expertise of his father, Philippe, who lived in Vallauris and learned the pottery trade from him. In 1947, he opened his own workshop. He initially worked on traditional products before converting to decorative ceramics. An excellent artisan potter, his workshops prospered. In the late 1960s, he developed his famous "water foam" decoration, created by adding chemicals to the glaze to create variations in the size and depth of the craters. This decoration, applied to large pieces with shapes inspired by Greek antiquities, is emblematic of his production. It was followed in West Germany by the industrialized factories of the post-war period, which in turn developed "Fat Lava." In 1975, Marius Giuge passed on his workshop to his daughter, also a ceramist, thus perpetuating a family tradition. Facing the consequences of the oil crisis, the workshop closed permanently in 1980 (the date of Marius Giuge's death).
