Vintage Danish Blue Glass Drop Vase by Per Lutken for Holmegaard

About the Item

Vase by Per Lutken for the Danish glass company Holmegaard in the 1960s. H: 14.5cm 14x12cm Per Lutken was a famous Danish glassmaker who joined Holmegaard in 1942 and worked there until his death. He helped to revive the glassmaking industry, which was running out of steam at the time, by contributing his refined, timeless style, which has become a classic of Scandinavian design and can be found in many Danish and Swedish homes. A highly productive craftsman, he would go on to create many of the models that would make the glassware industry such a success in Denmark and around the world. The Holmegaard factory was founded in 1823 in Næstved, south-west of Copenhagen, and started out making green and brown bottles, before turning to art glass. Count Christian Conrad Danneskiold-Samsøe bought the Holmegaard estate and realised that the local peat could be used as fuel. He therefore applied to the King of Denmark for permission to set up a glassworks there, but died before he got the go-ahead... and it wasn't until 1825 that his wife, Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe, received the King's favourable response. Although she was a widow with six children, she decided to continue her husband's project and launched the Holmegaard glassworks (Holmegaard Glasværk), which produced glass until 2008.
