William Bill Marshall Leach Pottery Painted Vase
About the Item
A very fine vintage hand-crafted studio pottery vase painted with simple grass designs by renowned potter William Bill Marshall (British, 1923-2007) and made at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall dating from around 1957-58.
Richard Batterham (British, 1936 – 2021) whose personal collection this delightful vase comes who worked at the Leach Pottery from 1956. He was greatly influenced by the potters who worked there including William Bull Marshall who was one of the main potters working at the pottery at the time.
This stylish stoneware vase stands on a narrow flat round base and is of shouldered ovoid form with a tall cylindrical neck and thick top edge. The vase has the characteristics of a hand thrown piece made in a brown colored clay with a salt glazed finish and loosely hand painted with simple brushed grass patterning. The vase has an impressed Leach Pottery mark to the base along with an incised monogram for William Bill Marshall.
Provenance: Acquired from the estate of Richard Batterham, who spent two years from 1957 as an apprentice working alongside Bernard Leach and William Bill Marshall at the Leach Pottery and was greatly influenced by the their work. At the time he acquired a number of pieces directly from the artists he worked with. Thence consigned by a gentleman owner and collector.
