About the Item
Daum
For collectors, Daum is a name in the first rank of the French makers of art glass, along with those of Émile Gallé and René Lalique. Led in its early decades by the brothers Auguste (1853–1909) and Antonin Daum (1864–1931), the company, based in the city of Nancy, established its reputation in the Art Nouveau period, and later successfully adopted the Art Deco style.
In 1878, lawyer Jean Daum took over the ownership of a glassworks as payment for a debt and installed his sons as proprietors. Initially, Daum made glass for everyday purposes such as windows, watches and tableware, but the success that Gallé enjoyed at the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris — the international showcase for which the Eiffel Tower was built — inspired the Daum brothers to begin making art-glass pieces. They produced popular works of cameo glass, a decorative technique in which an outer layer of glass is acid-etched or carved off to reveal the layer below, but Daum became best known for vessels and sculptures in pâte de verre — a painstaking method in which finely ground colored glass is mixed with a binder, placed in a mold and then fired in a kiln.
Though early Daum glass was never signed by individual artists, the firm employed some of the masters of the naturalistic, asymmetrical Art Nouveau style, including Jacques Grüber, Henri Bergé and Amalric Walter (whose first name is frequently misspelled). Daum also collaborated with furniture and metalware designer Louis Majorelle, who created wrought-iron and brass mounts for vases and table lamps. In the 1960s, Daum commissioned fine artists, most notably Salvador Dalí and sculptor César Baldaccini, to design glass pieces. As you see from the works offered on 1stDibs, Daum has been home to an astonishingly rich roster of creative spirits and is today a state-owned enterprise making pâte de verre figurines.

- Daum Nancy French Art Deco Acid Etched Pâte-de-Verre Flower Vase, ca. 1930By DaumLocated in New York, NYThis geometric, floral inspired 1930s French Art Deco deeply acid etched pâte-de-verre elegant flower vase bears the signature Daum Nancy on the base edge. There is a nice weight to the thick-walled heavy glass. It has a beautiful amber yellow color etched right through to the clear. Sophisticated in its simplicity, the design consists of geometrically-stylized leaves and flowers encircling a vase, with a smooth banded edge at the top. Period: Ca. 1930’s Style: French Art Deco. Medium: Acid Etched Pâte-de-Verren Art Glass. Dimensions: Height: 6.875” x max. diameter: 6.875” x opening diameter: 3.375” Markings: Engraved on the base edge, ‘Daum Nancy’ Condition: Good antique condition. No chips or cracks. No damages, no restorations. Maker: Daum Freres of Nancy, France The success of the Daum glass company is directly a result of its excellent management and entrepreneurial spirit. The accidental founder of the company was Jean Daum (1825-1885). He was a financier of the company when it was known as the Verrerie Sainte Catherine. This company quickly hit hard times and it was Jean Daum who took control of it before it failed. Daum was not an artist by trade. He was a notary and industrialist. This new venture was a trial by fire. The first glass produced by Daum is collectible, but it was not art glass. They made mostly clear glass with gold rims to be used while dining. It wasn’t until the 1890s that Daum began producing what we think of today as “Daum Nancy” glass. Daum glass is thought to be made by the Daum Freres (brothers). This was not accurate when the company first began operating. It was Jean Daum and his son Auguste Daum (1853-1909) who laid the ground work for Auguste and his brother Antonin Daum (1864-1930) to lead the company in the early 20th century. All Daum glass is handmade, but that certainly shouldn’t lead the reader to believe that Daum was a mom and pop...Category

- Daum Lilac & Pink Hibiscus Vase - Pâte de verreBy DaumLocated in Lexington, KYThe rare and ancient process of pate de verre dates back to 5000 B.C, and is extremely difficult to master; However, the pieces produced by this method have a texture, substance, and softness simply not attainable any other way. The material is made from specially produced batches of crystal melted and broken into smaller pieces. Several factors have a bearing on the final color, including the size of the fragments, proportions, chemical reaction between certain minerals, and the rate at which the temperature increases and decreases within the kilns. This beautiful Hibiscus Vase...Category
