Zsolnay "Japanese Cosmos" Glazed Ceramic Vase
About the Item
This evocative Japonist vase was designed by Sándor Apáti Abt for the Hungarian ceramic factory Zsolnay. The vase features a radiant background of gold, green, and orange, and is adorned with Japanese cosmos flowers, known as “秋桜” (akizakura). Introduced to Japan in the 19th century, these delicate blooms quickly became emblematic of autumn, celebrated in vast seasonal fields. The vase’s form is inspired by the columbine flower, whose distinctive nectar spurs curl gracefully from the petals, echoing the vessel’s elegant curves.

Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes:
The Zsolnay factory rose to prominence following the 1867 formation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which brought an end to political unrest in Hungary. Influenced heavily by the Viennese Secession movement, the factory became known for its innovative designs. One of Zsolnay’s signature innovations, the “eosin” luster glaze—developed in the 1870s—enhances the flowing contours of botanical forms with an iridescent, metallic sheen.
