About the Item
An original 1930 Siesta Catalina Island pottery ashtray and pipe holder is a delightful blend of functionality and Art Deco infualnced designed. Its vibrant matte blue glaze and hand-finished detailing bring the relaxed spirit of Catalina Island's golden era. Designed to hold both ash and a pipe, it showcases a clever combination of practicality and style. A rare find, this piece makes a striking addition to any collection or a unique centerpiece for a sophisticated smoking lounge.
This ashtray was designed by Roger Bud Upton, Sr. In the 1930s, he was paid $1.50 for his original model, of which a plaster mold was made at the Pottery factory. The ashtray and matchbook holder were produced and sold at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair for $2.50 each. The hand-painted Serape and sandals were done individually, and no two were ever the same.
