Italian Murano Sommerso Glass Dark Purple Round Ashtray

About the Item

Ashtrays or Empty pockets Murano smoked glass art, entirely made by hand with the technique of submerged glass. A Murano sommerso vase is a type of vase made using the sommerso glassmaking technique that originated on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy. The technique involves layering different colors of glass to create a three-dimensional effect, giving the vase a rich, almost liquid-looking appearance. Murano sommerso vases are typically made by layering several colors of glass and then shaping the glass into a vase form. The layers of glass create a visual depth and complexity, with the colors appearing to shift and blend as the vase is viewed from different angles. Sommerso vases were popular in the mid-20th century, particularly in the 1950s and 1970s, and were produced by a number of glassmaking companies on Murano, including Venini, Seguso, and Barovier, Toso & Mazzega. Many sommerso vases from this era feature bold, geometric shapes and vivid colors, and were designed by prominent artists such as Flavio Poli and Fulvio Bianconi. Murano sommerso vases remain highly collectible today, and are prized for their unique beauty and skilled craftsmanship. They can be found in a range of sizes and shapes, from small, delicate bud vases to large, sculptural statement pieces.
