A truly exceptional decorative object, this massive carved and polished rock crystal quartz ashtray exemplifies midcentury fascination with organic materials and monumental forms. Hand-hewn from a single block of natural quartz, the piece retains its rugged, translucent “live edge” perimeter—evoking the raw beauty of uncut mineral while the top surface and central bowl are smoothly polished to a glossy, light-catching finish.
The center is deeply carved into a symmetrical concave form with beautifully concentric bands that radiate like topographic rings, showcasing the stone’s natural crystalline veining. At 32 pounds, this is a substantial and grounding object, equally suitable as a statement tabletop centerpiece, ceremonial bowl, or as originally intended—a luxury ashtray.
The reverse is fitted with a green felted base inset into the carved underside for stability and protection of surfaces. Likely produced in Italy or the U.S. during the 1960s when naturalistic luxury materials like quartz, agate, and petrified wood were embraced by modernist designers.
