Sascha Brastoff (1917-1993) was an iconic mid century designer and the founder of a successful production ceramics studio factory and line that operated in Los Angeles, California. He was active in the Los Angeles area from 1947-1963 The production ware lines included dinnerware sets, vases, decorative plates, figurines and more. The wide range of series show Brastoff’s influences: theater and performance, futurism and abstraction, and the stylistic tastes of a midcentury Los Angeles. The production ware lines included dinnerware sets, vases, decorative plates, figurines and more. The wide range of series show Brastoff’s influences: theater and performance, futurism and abstraction, and the stylistic tastes of a midcentury Los Angeles. Sascha Brastoff was a successful Los Angeles ceramic designer at this time, who had a flair for promotion, mixing freely with Hollywood stars and celebrities. His bold, colourful and flamboyant creations fitted perfectly into this postwar era of adventurous ceramic design. Sascha began creating ceramics in New York in the early 40s. After a stint in the Air Force followed by working as a costume designer with Fox Studios in Hollywood, he set up a ceramics plant in West Los Angeles called Sascha Brastoff Product’s Incorporated with the backing of Winthorpe B. Rockefeller. In the mid 1960?s other art pottery makers such as Stangl and Royal Haeger were licensed to use Sascha’s name trademark. These items usually have a thick black cursive SB signature near the maker’s mark. His unique pieces, many displaying a modernist flair, have become a favourite with collectors.

Vallauris Lava Ceramic Cigar Ashtray Marius Giuge Catchall Vide Poche 1960s
By Marius Giuge
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Mid-Century Modern Vallauris Ashtray Bowl attributed to Marius Giuge, France, 1960s
Large Fat Lava Glazed Ceramic in Octagonal Form with Turquoise, Ochre and Brown Palette
Highly collectible French mid-century ashtray or catchall, handcrafted in the 1960s in Vallauris, a town renowned for its ceramic artistry. Attributed to Marius Giuge (1909–1980), this striking Fat Lava ceramic bowl features a distinctive octagonal shape with four recessed holders, ideal for cigars or cigarettes and a bold, lava-like texture.
The volcanic glaze technique creates a tactile surface in deep brown and ochre tones, accented by a vibrant turquoise blue glazed center with a crackled effect. This vivid, contrasting palette and thick glaze are signature characteristics of the "Fat Lava" movement, made famous in postwar European ceramic design.
Perfect as a statement piece for a coffee table, entryway, or office desk. Use it as a vide-poche, cigar ashtray, decorative bowl, or desk tidy.
