'Smoke.A.Bowl', a stoneware ashtray in the shape of an iconic skate bowl

About the Item

'Smoke.A.Bowl' is a stoneware ashtray in the shape of a landmark Athenian skate bowl. Unapologetically stating that an ashtray needs design and identity , the iconic bowl is scaled down by 100:1, recontextualising its form. In an age where smoking exemplifies cultural guilt, the designers were intrigued by its most evident contrasts: the “live fast, die young” association with skateboarding set against the wellness imbued spin of the current marijuana culture; the dreadful warnings on cigarette packs vs. the allure of vaping. The design indulgently winks at the outdated sensuality of smoking while offering a tiny moment of utopian clarity, where health is an afterthought and we are all immortal. Smoke.A.Bowl seeks to initiate a controversial discussion about a trademark Greek habit, which has been recently prohibited. It is a product of Athens’ rebellion, where due to non-compliance, smoking has been banned, re-banned and banned yet again. Working with local craft expertise, Smoke.A.Bowl is cast in stoneware and finished in a black matt slip, epitomising the vain and dire character of a lethal habit. In collaboration with skateboarding and design initiative Latraac.
