Antique French Wine Cask Access Door, Circa 1890

About the Item

Hand-carved circa 1890 from oak, this arched-shaped piece of wood was originally the access door to a wine cask at a French vineyard. There is a shaped crossbeam near the top that is affixed with a large bronze bolt that was designed to secure the door in place. Whenever the cask needed cleaning, the wood rotated so that the door could be removed (the crossbeam still rotates today). A bronze spigot with a shaped handle is still threaded through the door near the base. A unique architectural, this late 19th century wine cask access door would make a wonderful accessory in a kitchen, dining room, or bar area.
