About the Item

A stunning Napoléon III-period cavé liqueur crafted of glorious Baccarat cut glass and doré bronze. An opulent classical motif informs every aspect of this lush design. The footed case is crafted in the ancient Greco-Roman style, with a ring of lush acanthus, and boasts intricate cast ormolu accents on the interior and exterior, including a detailed finial, medallion and grapevine latch. Inside, three liqueur bottles, featuring a hand-gilt, etched glass design and gilded stoppers, and 15 cordial glasses are held in place on a mirrored platform by a twining grapevine of cast ormolu. An object of practical use as well as beauty, the case opens by releasing the latch, opening the gate doors, and lifting the lid, which locks in the open position with the slide of a latch. The ormolu carrying stand can be removed for ultimate portability. Since the firm’s establishment in 1764 by permission of Louis XV, Baccarat has garnered world acclaim for their phenomenal creations and still remains the ultimate crystal of the Continent. Circa 1890 12” diameter x 15” high Established by the Royal Decree of Louis XV in 1765, Baccarat has consistently produced glass and crystal works that have revolutionized and dazzled the industry. From the beginning, the company received numerous royal commissions from French nobility and aristocrats across Europe, most notably Tsar Nicolas of Russia, Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon. Revolution, war and economic crises have brought the firm to the brink of bankruptcy several times over the past 200 years, but Baccarat has managed to pull through each time. They won their first gold medal at the 1855 International Exhibition and have continued to carry off prizes at international exhibitions since. Today, antique works by this prestigious company are exceedingly rare, especially magnificent examples such as this.
