Piero Fornasetti Complete Set of Eight Ceramic Coasters, Italian Opera
By Piero Fornasetti
Located in Downingtown, PA
Piero Fornasetti Complete Set of Eight Ceramic Coasters,
Il Mondo Alla Rovecia Pattern, (“The topsy-turvy world”),
After opera by Antonio Salieri,
1950-60s
The set of whimsical pottery barware pottery coasters represent different scenes from an Opera, Il Mondo Alla Rovecia with the roles of each character reversed. There is the bottom section of the gold cardboard box.
Dimensions: 4 1/8 inches diameter x 1 1/8 inches high (10.48cm diameter)
With Antonio Salieri’s star on the wane, Il mondo alla rovescia (“The topsy-turvy world”) was coolly received by the Viennese in January 1795 and quickly fell into near-oblivion for over two centuries. It is an amusing comedy from an experienced master of opera buffa.
The mildly risqué action is set on a mythical island where women, Amazon-like, rule the roost and men are reduced to drooling subservience. The status quo is challenged with the arrival of two shipwrecked aristocrats, a Count and a Marquise, and a European vessel intent on their rescue – although, in keeping with contemporary taste.
