About the Item
Gilded Elegance: A Set of Vintage Fred Press Highball Glasses,
1950s–60s
This set of seven vintage highball glasses, designed by the celebrated American artist and designer Fred Press, perfectly encapsulates the mid-20th-century aesthetic of sophisticated leisure. Also known as Tom Collins glasses, their tall, cylindrical form is adorned with a dynamic and elegant design. The surface is decorated with alternating bands of textured, white "cloud" patterns and horizontal stripes of 22-karat gold, creating a striking contrast that is both modern and luxurious.
Fred Press (1919–2012) was a remarkably versatile and prolific creative force. Having studied and taught at the Vesper George School of Art and founded the sculpture collection Contemporary Arts, Inc., his move to New York in the 1950s marked a pivotal moment in his career. As chief designer for Rubel and Co., he applied his artistic vision to glassware and giftware, quickly becoming a leading figure in the field. His designs, which won awards from institutions like New York's Museum of Modern Art, are celebrated for their unique blend of artistry and functionality.
These highball glasses, with their distinctive design and the "© Fred Press" mark on the lower white band, are emblematic of his signature style. They reflect the post-war era's renewed emphasis on entertaining and home décor, where everyday objects were transformed into works of art. The use of gold and the abstract cloud motif speak to a blend of classic opulence and the artistic experimentation of the period. More than just drinkware, these glasses are a tangible piece of American design history, showcasing the legacy of a master who helped shape the look of modern living.
