French Faux Book Leather Tantalus and 6 Engraved Crystal Glasses

About the Item

This fabulous novelty leather faux-book hinged case has been ingeniously designed to secretly hide six adorable animal-themed whisky crystal tumblers. Beautifully crafted from two gilt-tooled antique leather 'books' entitled 'Beaumarchais Théâtre' and 'Montaigne Essais' stacked one on top of the other, the lid of the case lifts to reveal the set nestled perfectly inside a shaped and marbled lining. The glasses are most unusual, and feature stylised animal motifs, including a fox and a horse, beautifully engraved in the base of each. The stacked box is in good vintage condition, its leather nicely aged and richly patinated, but with some minor losses in places. This is a delightful piece of vintage barware and would make a fine accessory for a well- appointed home bar or library.
