George III English Provincial Horn Drinking Beaker by John Ollivant
About the Item
A very rare George III Silver mounted English Provincial Horn Drinking Beaker made by John Ollivant of Manchester circa 1785.
The Beaker has beautifully shaded, slightly tapering, horn sides. The rim displays a wide silver mount, decorated with a horizontal double reeded girdle, with scalloped section below. The Beaker is in excellent condition and displays three clear maker's marks for John Ollivant of Manchester. John Ollivant sent his work to the Chester Assay Office for marking, however this would have gone straight to the client. Work by John Ollivant is particularly rare, usually flatware, and to find other items bearing his mark is particularly unusual. This is, however, the first silver mounted horn English Provincial Beaker which we have seen over the years. This was previously sold at the famous Grosvenor House Antiques Fair in 1983 by Mrs Susan Benjamin owner of the famous Halcyon Days shop in London. A very rare drinking vessel in quite excellent condition.
