Originating from Italy in the 1970s-80s, this bowl features the Tartaruga (tortoise) pattern, boasting deep topaz and amber hues reminiscent of popular 19th-century European turtle shell items. The technique involves two layers of hand-blown glass infused with light and dark brown elements.
The tortoiseshell art glass bowl was first patented in London in 1880 by Francis Pohl and S.A. Whitman. Franz Pohl, associated with the Josephinenhütte glassworks in the Sudeten mountains, further developed the tortoise pattern, revolutionizing glassmaking possibilities of the time. His innovative design garnered widespread acclaim and was widely imitated for years thereafter.
