Late 19th c Novelty Silverplated Hunting Dog-Form Claret Jug Marked "Austria"
About the Item
Late 19th c Beautifully Modelled Novelty Silver Hunting Dog-Form Claret Jug "Austria," marked on the collar. With hinged head and original ground glass stopper. The fashion for animalistic claret jugs dates back to the 16th century. It was at the end of the 19th century that silversmiths reached the height of creativity and variety of animal-form claret jugs. It is naturalistically modelled, the head with glass eyes finely cast and chased with lines of hair. The mouth of the dog forms a spout. Many different animal-form jugs were produced at this time but few original examples survived because of their fragility.
