About the Item

Set of 4 vintage cut crystal water goblets or glasses feature elegant, streamlined form with pronounced panel cuts starting from the top of the stem and continuing upwards, reminiscent of Moser's Papal style barware. The classic design of the Lafayette pattern is influenced by both the Art Deco and Mid Century Modern styles, resulting in shapes that feel both traditional and modern at the same time. The glasses are in very good vintage condition; one of the glasses is marked with Seneca logo on the bottom. The water goblets are the tallest glasses in the Lafayette pattern, standing 7.25" tall; the pattern was produced in 1950s-1960s as a part of high-end spectrum of Seneca Glass company designs; the company used their own hand-blown crystal glass that was cut by hand. Seneca Glass Company was founded in 1891 by a group of glassworkers, largely neighbors from the Black Forest area of Germany, in Fostoria, Ohio, in a factory recently vacated by Fostoria Glass Company. In 1896, Seneca Glass followed Fostoria Glass to West Virginia. From the beginning Seneca created quality, hand-blown lead glass, specializing not only in the cutting of glass, but also in glass blowing, etching and engraving. They were renowned for their high-end, elegant cut glass; for the most elaborate patterns up to 14 hours could be spent in cutting a single goblet. At one time the company employed over fifty hand-cutters. In 1930s Seneca Glass products were distributed by Bloomingdales. By early 1960s Seneca Glass was sold by Marshall Field and Company, Neiman Marcus, the Pinnacle Club in New York, the Tudor Room of the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco, the Ritz Carlton Hotel of Boston, and Tiffany's of New York, among others. Eleanor Roosevelt and U.S. Vice-President Lyndon Johnson purchased Seneca glassware. Seneca was the last elegantly cut American lead crystal sold by Tiffany's as the demand for expensive cut crystal faded in 1970s. The company closed in 1983.
