Victorian Silver-Plated Serving Tray by Collis & Co.

About the Item

Antique Silver-Plated Serving Tray by Collis & Co. circa 1860. Stylish octagonal form with a crisply cast reeded edge and handles, mounted with acanthus leaf decoration. The surface also has traces of scrolling leaf decoration, since polished back with age. Collis & Co. were a distinguished English silversmiths based at 130 Regent Street, London. Known for their exceptional craftsmanship during the 19th and early 20th centuries, Collis & Co. produced fine domestic silver and silver-plated wares of enduring quality. Dimensions: H 3 cm x D 31 cm x W 54 cm (46cm W excluding handles) Condition: Good original condition. Light scratching and pitting to the silver plate commensurate with age. Old engraved decoration on the surface has been softened with age.

A stunning antique English silver plated cocktail or drinks tray made by the top-notch London silversmith "Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Company at 112 Regent Street, London; signed on the understand. This stylish tray stands on four attractive feet and is decorated with a beautiful engraved design. Just back from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory. Dating to c.1920, it remains in superb condition measuring 14" x 9 1/2" x 1/2". In 1880 William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman acquired premises at 112, Regent Street, London and founded The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company. The firm produced a wide range of items from solid silver tableware and cutlery, jewellery and watches to electroplaters, trophies and surgical instruments. In 1898 the expanded and well-known firm became a limited company and added "Ltd" to its name. The abundant advertising activity of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd left numerous illustrations of their products. The company also became a distinguished dealer in diamonds and precious stones and a popular retailer of items by other silversmiths such as Harrison Brothers & Howson, William Comyns, Martin Hall & Co Ltd, W&G Sissons, among others. The company's artworks received acclaim at a number of international exhibitions from the 1880s through to the early 1900s.
