Victorian Sterling Silver and Crocodile Skin Hip Flask, 1900

About the Item

A beautiful English sterling sliver and crocodile late Victorian antique hip flask. Mounted with a precision made domed top with a smooth hinge and bayonet fitting and retaining its original cork stopper. The the sterling silver drinking cup fits snugly onto the glass bottle meeting the dark brown crocodile covering at the mid-point. While on a cold winters walk use the drinking cup or be daring and take a nip from the bottle. Hallmark struck to both the drinking cup and stopper.     A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver Armada jug and stand; part of our wine and drinks related silverware collection This magnificent antique Victorian English sterling silver Armada jug has an elongated pear-shaped form onto a circular pedestal foot. The stand has an octofoil shaped form with a central swept raised circular well. The cylindrical neck of the silver jug is embellished with exceptional cast and applied floral and scrolling foliate decoration, all on a matte background; there is an exceptional shield shaped vacant cartouche to the underside of the pouring lip, surmounted with scrolling leaf mantling. The knopped neck is further ornamented with an interlacing border flanked with plain bands, to a swept portion encircled with pensile bud designs. The decoration to the body incorporates two large scrolling leaf bordered vacant cartouches, each surmounted with a coronet design embellished with floral ornamentation. Each cartouche is further embellished with a chased figural mask design to the nadir, flanked with large floral motifs. Either side of each cartouche is embellished with an exceptional cast and applied three-dimensional winged mermaid and mermen, gesturing towards the aforementioned coronet. The decoration to the body is further embellished with large scrolling leaf and floral sprays incorporating a cast and applied protruding leopard's head to the anterior portion.     We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Particular pair of toilet bottles in cut and ground by hand crystal; for their execution it was used crystal with a percentage of lead of 30%; the high lead content, instead of calcium present in the common glass, gives the crystal a remarkable hardness, exceptional transparency, and a high refractive index; with the techniques of cutting, grinding and polishing, scrupulously performed by hand, extraordinary light effects and reflections were created; the bottles with the ball body are surmounted by a silver neck and a hinged lid finely chiseled with Victorian motifs. They bear the Classic English silver punches from which we can tell that they were produced in the Victorian style in the city of Birmingham in 1907 (Edward VII) by the firm Phineas Harris Levi & Joseph Wolfe Salaman. The company was founded in 1870 in Birmingham on Northampton Street, in 1872 moved to larger premises on Hockley Street and in 1885 the business was finally moved to a prestigious building on Newhall Street.
