1960s Oiva Toikka for Nuutajarvi Notsjo, Iittala Flora Glass Serving Bowl

About the Item

A vintage clear glass salad bowl by Oiva Toikka for Nuutajarvi Notsjo which later became Iittala. This design is called Flora and was done in 1966. This large glass serving bowl has a beautiful pattern of abstracted flowers. This design can be found in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A bit about the designer from the FinnStyle website, "One, if not the most recognizable names in Finnish glass design, Oiva Toikka’s boundless imagination has taken glass art to new heights. Best known for his Birds collection for iittala, he brings mouth-blown glass creations to life. Each one is hand-crafted so every piece is an original and as creator of these birds for over 35 years, his craft in glass blowing remains unmatched. A celebrity of the art world, Toikka has won a bounty of awards that include the Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal and the Kaj Franck award to name a few. A successful artist in many mediums, Toikka has also created iittala’s Kastehelmi glass dinnerware, Marimekko Bird Mugs, and a few fabric patterns such as Marimekko’s Afrikan Kuningatar cotton fabric."

1980s Dansk Denmark Brown Mist Covered Casserole Serving Dish by Niels Refsgaard
By Dansk
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage lidded casserole serving dish in Brown Mist by Niels Refsgaard for Dansk. You may know Dansk, if not don't worry I'll get to them later. For now, let's look at who Niels Refsgaard is. From a Dansk catalog, "Niels Refsgaard has been an integral part of the Dansk story for more than 60 years as a designer, creator, and brand champion. Niels prefers to be called a “simple country potter” and it is his amazing talent and devotion to his Craft that shines through in all that he creates. We can’t think of a design collaboration between brand and craftsman that has stood the test of time the way the Dansk and Refsgaard marriage has. That longevity has yielded much success along the way, as evidenced by the fact that so many of Niels’ dinnerware patterns are still active in the Dansk line today. We like to think of Niels as one of Mid-Century Modern’s ceramic masters, and as this design theme is enjoying renewed attention in the last several years we have not only re-issued some of Niels’ early work, we’ve commissioned him to develop a new approach to the casual dining experience." And now, let's look at the 'brown mist' design - Dansk Brown...

By Joseph Canabas
Located in Atlanta, GA
A late 19th century Louis XV style Rafraichissoir based on a design by renowned cabinet maker Joseph Gengenbach dit Canabas (1715 - 1797). The rafraichissoir was developed in the 18th century as a result of the need for privacy and thanks to the implementation of a new room, the dining room. The 18th century French aristocracy had a need for a breakfast, luncheon or dinner without eavesdropping by nosy servants. And so, the rafraichissoir came into being. A small table on casters...
