Pair of Art Nouveau Polished Silver Bowls by J. Hoffmann for Wiener Werkstätte

About the Item

Pair of Art Nouveau polished silver bowls by Josef Hoffmann for Wiener Werkstätte By: Josef Hoffmann, Wiener Werkstätte Material: silver, silverplate, metal Technique: embossed, plated, silvered, polished, metalwork Dimensions: 4.5 in x 1.5 in Date: early 20th century, circa 1920 Style: Vienna Secession, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Art Déco Place of origin: Austria This refined pair of polished silver bowls was designed by Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstätte around 1920. Executed with outstanding viennese craftsmanship, the bowls feature undulating rims that progressively widen from the narrow base to the broader mouth. Maker's marks are visible near the rim of each piece. The simplicity of form allows the fine quality and luminescence of the silver to take center stage. Hoffmann was a pioneer of austrian Modernism, bringing elegance and geometric clarity to design. His creations for the Wiener Werkstätte fuse Viennese Secession motifs with the sleek forms of emerging Art Déco style. This rare duo embodies the Wiener Werkstätte's brief yet brilliant contribution to 20th century design before its closure in 1932. Crafted during an era of great innovation in austrian arts and architecture, these bowls will elevate any tablescape or collection of modern design.
