Whiting, sterling silver centerpiece or fruit bowl in Art Nouveau style, with beautiful, flowing floral motifs adorning the rim. It measures 12 1/2'' in diameter by 3 1/2'' in height, weighs 20.5 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. Originally in Massachusetts, Whiting Manufacturing Company relocated to New York in 1875. The company was purchased by Gorham in 1924 and the production transferred to Providence, Rhode Island. This exceptional Japanese silver serving bowl has a plain circular rounded form onto a plain circular swept, spreading foot. The body of this antique silver bowl is embellished with impressive engraved traditional oriental chrysanthemum floral and foliate designs. The decoration to the body incorporates gilded ornamentation to the centre of the flowers.
