It’s no wonder that these beautiful pieces continue to be treasured by collectors and enthusiasts alike. A surtout de table is a decorative centerpiece that is placed on a dining table, typically during formal occasions or special events. It was designed to adorn the center of a dining table and enhance the visual appeal of the table setting during grand dinners and banquets. Surtouts de table were particularly popular during the 18th and 19th centuries among European aristocracy and upper-class circles. They were used to showcase the host’s wealth, taste, and social status. Place a vase of flowers on these mirrored bronzes, or use them to frame another decorative center piece.

An Impressive French Napoleon III Style Gilt Bronze Surtout de Table, Circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
Surtout de table are ornamental French trays, designed to be placed on a dining table as a centerpiece for formal occasions. Our Napoleon III-style surtout de table, which dates to circa 1900, would make an impressive addition to any dining table. Measuring over 50 inches long and 32 inches wide, this surtout de table features a large piece of shaped glass encircled by an animated scene of a putti hunting party. In each corner of the frame is a pair of gilt bronze putti, facing in opposing directions, armed with a spear. All the cherubs are resting on curled leaves that emerge from a pierced, segmented console. The foliage, which has a fluted ground, continues around the frame, enhancing the sinuosity of the mirror. Depth is added in the form of the numerous gilt bronze hunting dogs that are giving chase to scattered wolves and deer. Some of the hounds are actively engaged with their prey, who really stand out due to their patinated bronze chocolate color. The result is a beautiful gilt bronze surtout...

Unusual 18th Century Venetian Center Piece in Carved Walnut Wood, Circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
Although the Rococo in France (where the style originated) lasted from roughly 1725 to 1760, other countries in Europe produced period art and furniture until the late 18th century. One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet. The carvings of the centerpiece are quite exceptional, given the height and breadth of the piece. A wonderful decorative accessory for any large table, our walnut Venetian centerpiece...
