About the Item
Waiting for Godot 153934-158716, 2017 (Ceramic, C. 18 in. h x 14.2 in. diam., Object No.: 3537)
The inspiration for Bae Sejin’s intriguing ceramic designs is the play Waiting for Godot by the Irish avant-garde novelist Samuel Beckett. Sejin described his vision: “The lapse of time involves duration, repetition, transformation, and circulation. Working with clay as a natural material is unifying the time of nature and human existence. Samuel Beckett revealed the passage of time in nature in his play Waiting for Godot, in which the two main characters are repeatedly waiting for Godot who never arrives. Beckett’s play becomes the motivation for my work”.
The elegant artistic expression of Bae’s work derives from the inventive process of handbuilding his sculptures from hundreds of small ceramic elements, each of them numbered by the designer to document the lapse of time.
Bae Sejin was born in South Korea in 1981 and currently lives and works in Seoul. He trained at the National University of Seoul and is the recipient of several prestigious awards. In 2017 he was a LOEWE Craft prize finalist.

- Rollmann, Unique Ceramic Vessel by Corinna FriedrichBy Corinna FriedrichLocated in New York, NYRollmann, 2020 (Ceramic, C. 10.7 in. h x 8 in. diam. Object No.: 3819) The ceramic artist Corinna Petra Friedrich lives and works in Leipzig, Germany, where she studied painting, graphic design, and ceramics at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts. The artist creates her inspiring works of art in a reverse technique, first developing the decor, then the form. She prepares the clay by forming slabs, and subsequently applies with screen printing techniques the decor to the surfaces of the slabs, retaining the option of using engobe and monotype. The ceramic slabs she has prepared in this ingenious method are the raw material for her unique vessels. The patchwork of cut-out clay elements with their lively and experimental combination of graphic patterns and colors are assembled to build surprisingly playful vessels and...Category
