About the Item

French Faience Tromp L'oeil cabbage leaf tureen & cover, Paul-Antoine Hannong, Hannong Factory, Strasbourg, Alsace, France. 1748-1754 The massive (17 1/2 inches across) tureen is in the form of a large cabbage naturalistically modeled and painted in hues of green and yellow. Designed with a concentric layer of large green leaves with pale yellow veins, the cover formed as two layers of leaves modeled above the cabbage heart. Dimensions: 10 inches high x 17 1/2 inches wide During the 1740s and 1750s, the factory developed a range of brightly painted, highly decorative services as well as tureens made in natural forms such as shells, birds, and vegetables. This was the golden age of trompe l’oeil productions and the factory’s greatest productions were its tureens and potpourri which were imitated by other factories throughout Europe, including the Chelsea and Derby potteries in England.
