Kayserzinn Centerpiece Cachepot, Art Nouveau Sculpture, Germany, Late 19th

About the Item

Kayserzinn centerpiece cachepot, art nouveau sculpture, jugendstil, with shell pattern Origin Germany Period Late nineteenth century Brand KAYSERZINN The largest pewter factory in the Rhineland of the nineteenth century finds its origins in a small family business; in 1813 Johann Peter Kayser was born in Cologne who, after having learned the trade of a turner, opened a small foundry in Krefeld in 1851. In 1864, Johann Peter Kayser's eldest son, Engelbert Kayser, founded the atelier "Kunstgewerbliches Magazin für Gebrauchs- und Luxuswaren", which offered an overview of contemporary German and European craftsmanship. His brother Jean Kayser, on the other hand, already at the helm of his father's factory since 1874, had the "Leuconide - und Metallwarenfabrik J. P. Kayser Sohn" built in Krefeld-Bockum in 1885. We don't know much about the phase between 1870 and 1890, it is important however, to name the then existing division between the production of simple consumer goods and the creation of luxury items. In 1890 Engelbert Kayser decided to take the lead of the factory to unify and coordinate the activity and definitively put an end to the distinction between the two productions. He placed extreme trust in the artist and designer Hugo Leven, to whom he also financed various study trips to France and England. In the same period Karl Geyer also worked for the atelier, and the collaboration between the three men led to the development of the first collections and the first services and lasted until 1901. This is the phase of the floral decorations in relief made by Leven. Model Cachepot centerpiece Materials Special alloy similar to pewter but made particularly bright due to the presence of antimony and probably also a small percentage of silver Dimensions 38.5 x 22.5 x H 13 cm Conditions Perfect.
