About the Item

A pair of extremely unique ormolu and champlevé enamel jardinieres by Ferdinand Barbedienne. Each jardiniere is of rounded form, mounted on an elaborate ormolu tripod stand. The enamel body is decorated in champlevé technique with scrolling foliage, stylized motifs, and floral patterns in vibrant tones of turquoise blue, cobalt, green, violet, and red. The designs are outlined in gilt, emphasizing the structured surface. Around the upper band, further scrolling floral decoration continues in a frieze, while the central panels highlight bold stylized motifs framed by gilt arabesques. The surface is smooth and highly polished, giving prominence to the vivid coloration of the enamels. The ormolu mount features three legs formed as stylized supports with scrolling volutes terminating in paw feet. At the junction with the bowl, each leg is adorned with a feline head issuing from the ormolu, with open jaws and defined facial details. The legs are joined by a circular stretcher with applied rosettes, centered by a turned finial. The upper rim is cast with projecting extensions, balancing the structure of the piece and providing a strong architectural outline. The mounts retain a rich gilded surface, contrasting with the colored enamel body. Each jardiniere bears the engraved signature “F. Barbedienne” to the ormolu, confirming the maker. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892) was one of the leading French bronziers of the 19th century, renowned for producing both bronze sculpture and decorative works of the highest quality. His workshop frequently employed champlevé enamel decoration, often in collaboration with enamellers such as Ferdinand Levillain and Constant Sévin, whose work was integral to Barbedienne’s production. These jardinieres exemplify Barbedienne’s integration of bronze mounting with enamel decoration, a hallmark of his workshop. Pieces of this type were exhibited at international expositions and are now housed in major museum collections, reflecting the technical mastery and elaborate design for which the Barbedienne firm was celebrated.
