About the Item

A fine pair of French 19th-20th century Louis XV style gilt-bronze surtout-de-Table plateau centerpieces by the Parsian Orfèvre Paul Canaux et Cie. The ovoid shaped gilt-bronze bodies with floral, acanthus and leaves design fitted with a mirror plate. These pair of plateau's were manufactured by the workshop of Paul Canaux et Cie. in Paris during the period between 1892 and 1911. One stamped "P. Canaux et Cie Orfèvres - Paris" on the underside. Circa: Paris, 1900. Paul Canaux was a manufacturer jeweler-silversmith, active at 30 rue des Francs-Bourgeois in Paris, succeeding the silversmith and plater Joseph Mégemond, he entered his hallmark on 9 August 1888. Paul Canaux based his an anvil as symbol hallmark on that of his predecessor Mégemond. He was a manufacturer of silverware, cutlery, tea sets, centerpieces, serving dishes, plateau's and other silver and gilt-bronze objects d'art. His maker’s hallmark was struck off on the 12th of April 1892 and at the same date a new maker’s hallmark "PC & Cie" was registered, as the house changed its name to "Paul Canaux et Cie". Paul Canaux & Cie. still manufacturer jeweler-silversmith, now at 30 boulevard Malesherbes, but moved to 127 rue de Turenne, also in Paris, around 1889. Measures: Length: 29 1/4 inches (74.3 cm) Width: 19 inches (48.3 cm) Height: 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm).

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. A truly beautiful pair of plateaus. Overall condition is good. One has more rubbing to the gilt than the other with some areas where the gilt is more bronze color. The mirror plates have some minor scratches due to age and use. Please view all images.

A Large and Impressive Pair of Italian Early 20th Century Rococo-Style Gilt-Bronze Center Tables or Wall Consoles with Marble Tops, attributed to Luigi Ciampaglia, renowned for his leadership at the esteemed Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli (Naples). These tables boast intricately cast serpentine gilt bronze frames featuring an ornate apron adorned with bearded male masks flanked by swaged floral garlands, C-scrolls, and acanthus motifs. They stand on four elegantly curved cabriolet legs joined by an 'X' stretcher, all terminating in floral sabots, supporting luxurious veined green Verde Antico marble tops. Both tables are elegantly engraved with "Ciampaglia" on the apron, suggesting they were likely a special private commission by Luigi Ciampaglia, possibly crafted by either the Fonderia Ciampaglia or the Fonderia Chiurazzi. Circa: Naples, 1920-1940. Note: Another example of this model is currently on display at The Miramar Mansion in Newport, R.I Luigi Ciampaglia held the position of head artisan at the Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli. Established by Gennaro Chiurazzi (1840–1906), the Fonderia Chiurazzi originated from a modest foundry founded in Naples in 1870. It swiftly gained renown, expanding into a workshop within the Albergo dei Poveri, where a team of skilled craftsmen, known as formatori, diligently produced casts of numerous statues. Over time, the foundry secured the privilege of taking molds from prestigious collections, including those of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, the Capitoline Museums, the Vatican, the Borghese Gallery in Rome, and the Palazzo Pitti and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
