Raymond RUYS Rare Art Deco centerpiece Antwerp 1925 Silver / wood / mirror The firm Ruys, a jewelry shop located in Antwerp, was founded in 1854 by Jacques Ruys. In 1919 he was succeeded by his son Raymond Ruys, and it was under his management that in the twenties the firm decided to start selling silver objects in art deco style. The shop, located in the "St. George's Gate" in Antwerp still exists and in 1902 they had the whole shop decorated in art nouveau style, this splendid interior is preserved tot this day. The pinnacle for Ruys came in 1930 when Raymond Ruys designed 48 unique objects in silver for the Antwerp World Fair. They were made by the Brussels silversmith Raymond Delheid. Ruys participation in the exhibition certainly did not go unnoticed, he was awarded the ‘Grand Prix’. This designs by Raymond Ruys occupy a unique place in Belgium’s art deco production, partly because it was fairly unusual to have a series of uniques pieces made in silver unless they were specially commisioned, but mainly because of the uniqueness of their design. Ruys the designer sought inspiration for his designs in non-European cultures and in the African culture in particular. It is quite clear that Ruys was not really interested in the abstract-geometrical character of African art, as reflected in the closely-studied forms of the French silversmiths Maurice Daurat and Jean desprès, but more in the African aesthetic and use of ornamentation. It is as if Ruys puts himself in the position of an African designer faced with the task of manufacturing European objects to commision, which resulted in typological European items in an Africanizing style. The great originality and degree of difficulty of Raymond Ruys designs show that he was a designer and not a silversmith. He did not worry about the technical problems that would be incurred in manifacturing the pieces and it has to be said that this never detracted from the quality of the end product. His work is internationally appreciated, as evidenced by the presence of these signed objects in museum collections in Europe and the United States. Of the 48 created unique artworks, there are currently more than 30 objects in domestic and foreign museums.
