About the Item

Set of three large Indian brass chargers Indian, Early 20th Century Small: Height 2cm, diameter 50cm Medium: Height 2cm, diameter 58cm Large: Height 4cm, diameter 64cm This collection of brass chargers is made up of three pieces, each in a different shape and with a different design. The smallest charger depicts a central figure sitting atop an animal, surrounded by two other figures and animals in battle. The background consists of floral patterns with all motifs executed out of pierced brass in low-relief. The edges of the twelve-sided polygon are raised and adorned with geometrical motifs. Hammered and dot punched motifs of flowers, Indian lettering and geometrical shapes decorates the surface of the medium-sized charger. The central bowl of the largest charger is surrounded by twelve evenly spread out, identical oval frames. Inside them are floral patterns also extending beyond the frames and onto the large portion of the charger. All patterns are executed in low-relief.

Antique Arabesque Steel Plate with Gold and Silver Inlay
Located in London, GB
Antique Arabesque steel plate with gold and silver inlay. Continental, 19th century Dimensions: Height 2cm, diameter 32.5cm Beautifully crafted from steel with gold and silver damascening, this fine 19th century plate is profusely decorated with scrolling arabesque detailing. Around the rim of the plate, scrolling foliate vines and flowers are interspersed with four grotesque masks. The centre is similarly decorated, with intertwining scrolls, acanthus leaves, dolphin heads, and swans. There are also two coats of arms to the centre, which feature crowns and gold bows above. On one of the shields, the top half features a bird with its wings spread wide, with a church building to the bottom half. The other has an angel figure to the left and a double headed eagle to the right. The joining of two coats of arms in this manner often symbolizes the joining of two noble families in marriage, so the present plate could have been produced in celebration of a noble wedding. This manner of decoration is similar to that of Spanish metalworker Plácido Zuloaga...

Medieval Egyptian Mamluk Brass Tray Stand with Silver Inlay
Located in London, GB
This exceptionally beautiful and rare silver-inlaid brass tray stand dates from the medieval period, when the Mamluks ruled Egypt and Syria (1250-1517). The Mamluks originated as slave-soldiers, who served the Muslim caliphs and Ottoman Empire. With time, the Mamluks became a powerful military caste, and they managed to take control and establish themselves as rulers of certain areas within the Abbasid caliphate. The Mamluk dynasty commissioned great works of art and architecture, particularly in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, which was described in the 14th Century as ‘the centre of the universe and garden of the world’ (Ibn Khaldun, 1382). This tray stand is of biconical form, with a raised central band and flared base and rim. It is decorated with scrolling vines, overlaid with Thuluth inscriptions and roundels. On the lower body, the roundels contain floral motifs, and in the upper, stylised depictions of birds. The Thuluth inscriptions praise the patron, referring to him as ‘The High authority, the Lordly, the Possessor’, and ‘the learned’. The underside of the rim is engraved with a heraldic medallion, possibly the patron’s symbol. In the middle ages, when this piece was made, this item would have stood in a grand interior, supporting a tray full of fruit and fine food. The owner of this lavish piece which still bears traces of its original silver inlay would likely have been an Amir (prince) or some other important figure who was close to the Sultan in the Mamluk court. Mamluk tray...
