English Staffordshire Frog Mug with Hand Colored Garden Scenes, 19th Century
About the Item
Staffordshire frog mug transfer printed in brown and over painted by hand. One side depicts fruit picking while the other side shows young ladies on a swing in a garden. The top inside rim has a transfer and hand painted border of flowers. The interior has a brown molded frog applied at the bottom. The frog's head is raised so that It also added a bit of surprise and whimsy. Also known as a surprise mug. Imagine drinking your beer to find a frog at the bottom. First introduced in 1750 and became exceedingly popular during the first quarter of the nineteenth century.
