About the Item

This is figure #7047 by Sten Lykke Madsen for Bing & Grondahl. Made in the 1970's this piece was one of several interesting abstract figures from a line called Fabeldyr (creatures). These pieces are very different than most B&G products. They are glazed stoneware not porcelain, and were released from approximately 1970-1979. He was quoted as saying "They express a child-like cartoonish joy of life." This particular piece seems to represent a seated figure. About the series: There may be as many as thirteen of the Fabeldyr figures. Some were done in two different glazes (a light version and a dark version). A couple of the figures were quite large but most are under 5" (12 cm). Sten Lykke Madsen (1937-2020) was one of Denmark’s most well known ceramic artists. His career spanned more than 60 years and his stoneware sculptures of fabulous animals have found their way to more than 50 different exhibition venues. Sten graduated from the School of Art and Craft in Copenhagen in 1958 and established his studio in 1959. He worked as a designer for Bing & Grøndahl and Royal Copenhagen porcelain factories for 41 years. From 2003 to 2020 he was guest artist in residence at the International Ceramic Research Centre in Denmark. We have several of the Fabeldyr figures - in both light and dark glaze. They are amazing.
