About the Item
Antique Staffordshire Lord Horatio Nelson Hand Painted Toby Jug Pitcher Figure
This antique sculpted figural toby jug is modelled as Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson (British, 1758-1805). He stands in front of a cannon, with his right hand tucked in his waistcoat. He holds a telescope at his side, wearing a blue coat, white breeches and black bicorn hat. Plinth marked: "Nelson". Hand-painted. Glazed surface appearance. Circa 1870's.
Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, was an English admiral famous for his participation in the Napoleonic Wars, most notably in the Battle of Trafalgar, where he lost his life. His inspirational leadership, grasp of strategy, and unconventional tactics brought about a number of decisive British naval victories. It was as a result of these wars that he became the greatest naval hero in the history of the United Kingdom.
