About the Item

Organic pattern flat bowl. AB206 (1940's) This is a large flat bowl-sized piece decorated by Arne Bang, a private Danish studio. Arne Bang originally studied sculpture at the Royal Danish School of Fine Arts, and began her career by directing the Danish Pavilion at the 1925 Art Deco Exhibition with her brother Jacob Bang. He also opened a studio with the ceramic artist Carl Halier during the same period, and from 1932 to 1951 he worked in his own studio, Arne Bang. His goal was to bring high quality stoneware to the masses, and he produced as many as 10,000 pieces of stoneware a year. The artists of this period, such as those of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Bauhaus, were all imbued with a special spirit and philosophy of transforming works of art, which at the time were the privilege of the aristocracy, into beautiful designs for the masses and the working class. Most of Arne Bang's works are majestic and weighty, as if made of stone, with deep Shinogi patterns all over, like Greek or Roman entasis, but the more finely decorated pieces are much more highly evaluated. The potter shapes his vessels on the potter's wheel rather than on the potter's wheel, and each piece is individually molded based on the design. The rim of the bowl is softly undulated inward like a glasswork, and a handle is attached to the rim. The light brown glaze is overlaid with a rat-colored glaze, giving the bowl a complex appearance like natural stone. This piece is in very good condition and was exhibited in the exhibition "Modernism and Mingei: Scandinavian Ceramics" at the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum in 2014. The vessel has been examined by an expert by UV light and visual inspection to ensure that there are no repairs and that it is not twice kiln fired.
