Art Deco Vase Ceramic, "Sgrafitto", by Josef Ekberg, Swedish Vintage, 1922 -Handmade in Sweden 1922 -Ceramic -Very good vintage condition, consistent with age -Made and signed by renowned artist Josef Ekberg -7.5 " diameter, 9" height Josef Alfred Ekberg, born on February 18, 1877, in Värmdö parish, Stockholm County, was a Swedish ceramic artist and designer at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory. He served as the artistic director from 1908 to 1917 and developed the Sgraffito technique. Ekberg started working at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory at the age of 12. He progressed from being an assistant to becoming a decorator, painting the designs. Together with Gunnar Wennerberg, he developed a Sgraffito technique that was exhibited at the World's Fair in Paris in 1900. Ekberg was appointed as the artistic director in 1908 and was succeeded by Wilhelm Kåge in 1917. Ekberg continued to work at the factory until his death, primarily focusing on refractory ceramics. Ekberg's work is represented in collections such as the Hallwyl Museum and the National Museum in Stockholm. The exhibition "Josef Ekberg – a Gustavsberg Artist" was held at the Ceramic Center in Gustavsberg in 1977.
